Driving to the North Coast from Cairo

The drive from Cairo to the North Coast is not difficult. It is, however, extremely sensitive to when you leave — to the point where the departure time matters more than the route. Two cars taking the same road on the same weekend can arrive three hours apart.

The two routes

Desert road, then across to El Alamein

The usual way. You leave Cairo on the Cairo–Alexandria Desert Road, and rather than continuing into Alexandria you turn off onto the Wadi El Natrun–El Alamein road, which cuts north-west and meets the coast around El Alamein. From there you join the Alexandria–Marsa Matrouh coastal road and run west along it to whichever compound you are staying in. This is the route most people take and the one most navigation apps will pick.

Via Alexandria

The older way: straight up the desert road into Alexandria, then west out of the city along the coastal road. It is longer and it puts you through Alexandria traffic, so it is rarely the fast choice — but it is the right one if you were going to stop in the city anyway, or if you are heading somewhere at the eastern end of the coast.

When the road is bad

The Egyptian weekend is Friday and Saturday, which makes Thursday the outbound day and Friday afternoon through Saturday evening the return. In the summer months that pattern is severe: everyone is going to the same place, on the same road, in the same few hours.

• Thursday afternoon and evening, outbound — the worst regular slot of the week in season.
• Friday evening and Saturday, inbound — the same crowd coming home at once.
• The start and end of Eid holidays, in both directions, at a different order of magnitude.
• The first properly hot weekend of the season, when the coast opens all at once.

The reliable fix is unglamorous: leave early. An early-morning departure on a Thursday and a mid-morning one on a Friday are different journeys from the same trips made after lunch. Navigating once you are on the coast

The coastal road is a single spine with compound gates coming off it, and once you are on it you navigate by gate name rather than by street address. Compounds are gated, and access is controlled — arriving with the name of the compound, the unit reference and the phone number of whoever is meeting you matters far more than a pin dropped on a map. One practical note: plan fuel and stops on the desert-road leg rather than the coastal one. The stretch of coastal road between compounds is quiet, and it is a poor place to discover you are running low.
